Join us for the 19th Annual American Cancer Society Summer Soiree as we rock around the clock and travel back to the fabulous 50’s! This one-of-a-kind event helps us in our mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. It will feature a live and silent auction, wine pull, grub grab and so much more! This special evening honors community leaders who are making a positive impact on the North Alabama area. The honorees are nominated by their community for upholding substantial character. Our mission is to increase education and advocates for the early detection and prevention of cancer through these rising leaders. Funds raised at the Summer Soiree are used to provide critical patient services, fund Hope Lodge and transportation to treatment, cancer research, and education for the residents of North Alabama.
Martha is a very active member of our community, and she is more than passionate about the fight against cancer. While running her sewing business, Martha Pullen Company, she and her customers from all over the world raised more than $80,000 for several cancer organizations. For her, the fight against cancer became personal when her granddaughter, Cecil Hammett, was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma while a junior in high school. “The most horrid day of my life was when the physician said to my sixteen-year granddaughter, ‘Cecil, you have cancer.’ It became worse when we found out that it had only a 70 percent success rate to be cured. We quickly found out that if Cecil had been diagnosed ten years before, there would have been a zero chance of remission.” Martha said she truly appreciates the support of the community for the American Cancer Society’s life-saving mission and is proud to be the chair for the 2024 Summer Soiree.
LeadershipThe American Cancer Society provides information and resources to help patients and their loved ones manage through cancer treatment and recovery, and to help with the emotional support they need. They also work to remove barriers that stand between the patient and lifesaving treatment. For many patients with cancer, transportation challenges can create barriers to receive the treatment they need. Many people need daily or weekly treatment, often for several months. Family and friends may help, but they may not always have the time or resources to provide every ride. The American Cancer Society is proud to provide transportation assistance to those in need, by giving free rides to cancer-related medical appointments.
In 2022 alone, the American Cancer Society provided more than 323,000 rides to more than 35,000 patients in need through transportation programs.
